클라우드 아드보캇
대학 전공을 사범대로 선택한 데에는 고등학교 때 생물 선생님과 수학 선생님의 영향이 굉장히 컸다. 항상 자신의 지식을 적극적으로 나눠 주시는 그 모습이 어린 나이에도 꽤 인상에 남았는지, 망설임 없이 사범대를 전공으로 선택했고, 나도 그들과 같은 길을 걸을 것으로 생각했다. 하지만 교사가 된다는 건 단순히 가르치는 것 이외에 더 많은 것들을 필요로 했기 때문에, 내 깜냥으로는 그걸 감당할 자신이 없어서 결국은 교사의 길을 접고 지금의 커리어를 선택해서 생활하고 있다. 하지만, 그 과정에서 스스로를 되돌아 보며 느낀 점 한 가지는

였다. 이것이 그 이후 내 삶의 큰 방향성을 결정해 왔고, 현재도 여전히 유효하다. 이후 2015년에 Microsoft MVP가 된 후 이 방향성은 더더욱 공고해졌다. 오히려 이를 계기로 내가 배운 것들을 더욱 적극적으로 커뮤니티와 공유하게 됐다. 동시에 나 역시도 엄청나게 많은 것들을 커뮤니티에서 훌륭한 개발자들과 함께 만들어가고 배워가고 공유하게 되었다.
앞서 잘 다니던 회사를 그만두고 잠시 쉬어간다고 했더랬다. 그동안 쉬면서 꾸준히 한국어와 영문으로 블로그 활동도 하고, 한인 개발자 커뮤니티 밋업도 운영하면서 나름 바쁘게 살아왔다. 이 역시도 결국은 내가 지금까지 꾸준히 해 왔던 방향성의 연장선상에 있는 것들이었다.
그러는 와중에 마이크로소프트에서 클라우드 아드보캇 포지션에 지원해보면 어떻겠냐는 제안을 받았다. 어우야 완전 영광이지! 클라우드 아드보캇 프로그램은 마이크로소프트에서 진행하는 Developer Relations 활동의 일환으로 지금까지 내가 MVP로서 활동해 왔던 것과 크게 다르지 않다. 여전히 개발자 커뮤니티와 함께 호흡하고 활동하면서 마이크로소프트의 클라우드 개발 관련 지식을 공유하는 역할이다.

글로벌 네임드 아드보캇들이 인터뷰어로 참여했던 수많은 인터뷰를 거쳐 운이 좋게도 그동안 MVP 활동을 하면서 공유했던 여러 블로그 포스트, 샘플 소스 코드, 오픈 소스 코드, 컨퍼런스 발표 등을 긍정적으로 받아들여서 정말로 클라우드 아드보캇 프로그램에 참여하게 됐다. 더욱 영광스럽게도 아시아 지역에서 일본을 제외하고는 최초의 클라우드 아드보캇이 된다! 이것은 특히나 굉장히 의미가 있는데, 현재 대부분의 개발 지식 공유는 영문 문서로, 영어라는 언어로 이루어지고 있어서 한국을 포함한 다른 아시아 국가처럼 영어가 공용어가 아닌 나라에서는 정보에 접근하기가 쉽지 않다. 마이크로소프트에서 나의 역할이 이러한 언어의 장벽을 조금이나마 낮출 수 있기를 기대한다.
교사를 꿈꾸던 한 대학생이 뜬금없이 HR 부서에서 일하다가 그냥 그런 개발자 커리어를 시작하면서 MVP가 됐고, 이제는 클라우드 아드보캇이 됐다. 앞으로 무슨 일이 벌어질지 나도 모르겠다. 하지만 확실한 것은 여전히 개발자와 함께, 커뮤니티와 함께 한다는 것이고 꾸준히 배우고 나누는 삶을 살아갈 거라는 사실이다.
마이크로소프트에서 일한다는 것, 그 어찌 기쁘지 않을까?

Cloud Advocate
I majored of Education back in my uni days. My math teacher and biology teacher in my high-school days profoundly influenced my decision to choose the major. Like other teachers I had, they were so passionate about sharing their knowledge with students. Because of this strong influence from them, I decided my major without thinking twice and expected I would follow the same path as them. Well, being a teacher actually required more than teaching, which I wasn't too sure. Now I'm walking on a different career path. However, what I learnt from that is:
I can tell I know something, only after I can explain it to somebody.
This statement is the main direction of my life. Once I became a Microsoft MVP in 2015 (written in Korean), the direction has become more robust. I even more actively shared what I learnt by the community and with the community.
I wrote a post that I would take a pause. In the meantime, I've been running my Korean blog and English blog, and Korean developers community. All these activities are still in my direction.
Surprisingly, I got offered from Microsoft to apply for the Cloud Advocate position. OMG, why not? As a part of developer relations, working with other Cloud Advocate would be really awesome! The role itself doesn't look much different from what I've done as a Microsoft MVP. Rather, it gives more opportunities to get more closely involved with developer communities!

I took many interviews with globally famous Cloud Advocates and others, which took several months. Luckily, they recognised my MVP activities, including my blog posts, sample source codes, open-source contributions and conference speakings. As a result, I got accepted to become a Cloud Advocate! It's more honourable that, except Japan, I become the first Cloud Advocate in the Asian region! It's hard for developers speaking English as their second language, including Korea, to access information, because almost of all developer docs are written in English. I really hope that my role at Microsoft will help lower this language barrier by sharing developer knowledge in the local languages.
Now, a uni student dreaming an excellent teacher got his first job as an HR consultant, then became an ordinary developer, became a double-awarded Microsoft MVP and is becoming a Cloud Advocate. I don't know what's going to happen in the next ride. But for sure, all my activities point to the one thing – of the community, by the community and for the community.
